PASSIO

Passio is a new oratorio inspired by the Passion story with a contemporary focus on the role and position of women in sacred narration, with a wish to shine more light on their suffering and their transformation. The Collectif Trytone lead by Lucie de Saint Vincent (composer and pianist- FR) and Maribeth Diggle (stage director and soprano - USA) will assemble different musician-performers to create a new libretto and composition, reexamining and updating Passion stories from the baroque period as a jumping off point. Using democratic and inclusive creative practices, the ensemble will take collective ownership of a narrative, adding to the under represented Passion stories of women that will speak directly to today’s audiences.

Passio has just been awarded with the FACE foundation Jazz & New Music Creation Grant 2024, which supports Franco-American artistic collaborations. 

It is crucial to the narration that the participants have different backgrounds, musically and culturally, in order to offer a less Eurocentric, more diverse storytelling. Therefore, the collective will feature musicians and performers from different ethnic, cultural and artistic backgrounds: Jazz, Blues, early music, contemporary, Turkish or classical inspiration. Instruments such as viola da gamba, darbuka and oriental percussion, piano, fortepiano and harpsichord, as well as sung and spoken vocal parts and extended breathing techniques will provide us with a huge range of rich storytelling.

Passio est un nouvel oratorio inspiré de l'histoire et des symboles de la Passion chrétienne, revisité de nos jours à travers le rôle et la position des femmes dans la narration sacrée, tout en mettant en lumière leurs souffrances et transformations.

Le collectif Trytone mené par Lucie de Saint Vincent (compositrice et pianiste - FR) et Maribeth Diggle (soprano et metteuse en scène - USA) réunira différents interprètes pour créer un nouveau livret et une nouvelle composition inspirée de Passions écrites à l'époque baroque. En utilisant des pratiques créatives démocratiques et inclusives, le collectif s'appropriera un récit de Passion de femme qui résonne directement avec le public d'aujourd'hui et les questions actuelles de genres.

Passio est lauréat de la subvention de création Jazz & New Music 2024 de la fondation FACE, qui soutient les collaborations artistiques franco-américaines.

L'ensemble sera composé de musiciens d'origines ethniques, culturelles et artistiques différentes : Jazz, blues, musique ancienne, inspiration contemporaine, turque ou classique. Des instruments tels que la viole de gambe, la darbuka et les percussions orientales, le piano, pianoforte ou clavecin, ainsi que des parties vocales chantées et parlées ou des techniques de respiration élargies nous fourniront une large et riche palette narrative et sonore pour nourrir ce nouveau récit.

“Ascensions” and ''Entre Terre et Ciel'' revisits the music of the Mediterranean through a trio of voice, piano, and bass. By combining different forms of improvisation, the trio creates a soundscape in which traditional Eastern music, Western Classical music, and jazz intersect. The instruments and voice vibe in dialogue, carried by the rich, colourful, and surprising influences that these three musicians have discovered along their musical peregrinations.

Les Programmes ‘’Ascensions’’ et ''Entre Terre et Ciel'' revisitent les musiques du pourtour méditerranéen en trio avec voix orientale, piano et contrebasse. Nous créons une musique à la croisée de la musique traditionnelle orientale, la tradition classique occidentale et le jazz, tout en mêlant  différentes formes d’improvisations. Les instruments et voix dialoguent et vibrent,  portées par les influences colorées, riches, surprenantes que les trois musiciennes ont découvertes au fil de leurs  pérégrinations musicales

BACK TO BACH

Inspired by works from J. S Bach, the project “Back to Bach” aims to blend a unique new sound

by marrying the specificities of the baroque performance practice as well as those of jazz, including their respective styles of improvisation and ornementations. Fueled by major works of the German legend like St. Mathew and John Passions, as well as the Missa Brevis in A minor, cantatas and keyboard works, this rich repertoire spring off for inspiration. The end result transforms these works with new harmonies, rhythm, phrasing as well as brand new composition elements in between.

"Back to Bach'', premier album, utilise des œuvres de J.S Bach comme terreau d’inspiration. Nous jouons en quintet : soprano lyrique, piano, saxophone, contrebasse et batterie. Back to Bach vise à créer un son unique qui allie les spécificités de la pratique baroque à celles du jazz, et explore leurs styles respectifs d’improvisation et d’ornementation. Il s’inspire d’extraits d’œuvres majeures de la légende allemande comme la passion selon St Jean, la petite messe en la mineur, des cantates et d’œuvres pour clavier. Ce riche répertoire nous sert de terreau d’inspiration pour recréer un nouveau son et transposer cette musique dans le contexte d’aujourd’hui. Le résultat final transforme ces œuvres avec une nouvelle instrumentation, des changements dans les harmonies, rythmes, phrasés, ainsi que de nouveaux éléments de composition et d’improvisation.

Original, colourful, and captivating

Inspired by the works of J.S. Bach, the Back to Project project aims to create their new and unique sound by combining historically informed performance practice with jazz, including in their style of improvisation and ornamentation. Founded by pianist Lucie de Saint Vincent, the Collectif Trytone united around the idea of a musical synthesis intended to open the frontiers between different musics, musicians, and the public. The Collectif explores a universe of possibilities in order to break down both stylistic and musical barriers. This unconventional quintet — lyric soprano, piano, saxophone, contrabass and percussion — comes together at the intersection of Baroque, Classical, and jazz music and mixes different sorts of improvisations. The Collectif creates a symbiosis between these genres and practices and brings the music of the past into a contemporary context.

S Bach, ce projet «Back to Bach» vise à obtenir un sonunique et nouveau en combinant la pratique historiquement informée baroque avec celle du jazz, y compris dans les styles d'improvisations et d'ornementations. Fondépar la pianiste, Lucie de Saint Vincent, le Collectif Trytone s'est réuni autour de l'idéed'une synthèse musicale, tente d'ouvrir les frontières entre la musique, les musicienset le public. Le Collectif explore un univers de possibilités, dans le but de fairetomber les barrières à la fois stylistiques et musicales.
